A mango tree with 121 varieties of fruits

Gardeners started this unique experiment on the tree about five years ago with the aim of developing new varieties of mangoes and experimenting with their flavors.

Saharanpur: Primarily known for its hand-carved furniture, the district of Saharanpur has now become famous for something else – a unique mango tree that grows 121 varieties of fruits. It may sound unbelievable, but this mango tree is located in the Company Bagh area and is 15 years old. 

Gardeners started this unique experiment on the tree about five years ago with the aim of developing new varieties of mangoes and experimenting with their flavors.

Rajesh Prasad, the then Joint Director of the Center for Horticulture Experiments and Training, planted 121 varieties of mangoes on a mango tree. A local official said, “Mango cuttings of various types were planted on the branches of the indigenous mango tree. 

A separate nursery in charge was appointed to take care of the tree. Now this tree has been planted with Dussehra, Langra, Chaunsa, Ramkela, Amrapali, Many types of mangoes are found including Saharanpur Arun, Saharanpur Varun, Saharanpur Saurabh, Saharanpur Gaurav, and Saharanpur Rajiv."

Apart from these, other varieties also grow on this mango tree including Lucknow Safeda, Tommy at King's, Pusa Surya, Sensation, Rataul, Karmi Malda Mango, Bombay, Smith, Mangifera Jalonia, Gola Bulandshahr, Laranku, LR Special, Alampur Benisha and Asojia Deoband. 

Researchers say that work is still going on new species so that better varieties of mangoes can be produced. Officials say that mango enthusiasts can do similar experiments in trees planted in their fields or kitchen gardens.
